Maximize Car Insurance Savings

By Archana Sabesan on July 23, 2012

drive-(1).jpgIt is true that you can't change many of your risk factors. However, it is also true that you can save money by taking advantage of discounts that insurers offer for behaviors that lower your risk. The premiums you pay for your auto insurance are based on many different factors. And many of those, you do not have any control over, like your gender or age.

Things such as taking defensive driving classes, having safety equipment installed in your car, or just being a senior citizen can save you money. Do not assume that your agent will automatically offer all the discounts that you are eligible for. Do some research beforehand to figure out what discounts an insurer offers and what exactly those discounts require. If you know you are eligible for a discount but you are not getting it, make sure you speak up and get it sorted out.

Driving safely is another money-saving tactic. Of course, this seems like an obvious tip but some people do not take it seriously. For at least a period of 36 months, if you have a clean driving record then you can keep your premiums low. Make sure you keep yourself free of any tickets.

Also, if you bundle policies, that will help to maximize your savings as well. Policies that are grouped together are, more often than not, are cheaper than policies insured with different companies. If you are planning to insure multiple cars, homes, etc. then do it with the same company so you can save more money.

Finally, one of the most important things to remember is not to not settle immediately on the first offer that you are given. Rates can vary greatly between major insurance companies. You can use online quoting websites to help you shop around for different rates. Most websites provide free services in offering quotes for auto insurance. Compare these offers with an open mind, without any bias towards a certain company. Your main goal is to save as much money as you can!

Since auto insurance is mandatory, you really have no way around not buying it. And it does not go on "sale" so it might be hard if you are struggling financially, too. However, you can use the tips listed above, as well as many others, to make sure you are getting the best rate possible and in the end, saving money.
