Tips to Control Spending

By Archana Sabesan on February 4, 2012

shopping-(1).jpgThere are many tips for saving money. From couponing and shopping sales to vacationing off season. You can adjust your mindset and lifestyle to live on less money overall. These types of changes are not simple, but they can result in more than just saving money. They can lead to a healthier, happier, and stress-free life.

1. The first step is to control your spending by identifying your priorities. What are the things that you really want to be sure you have in your life? By setting your own spending priorities, you can help push off others who try to influence your spending. Only then can you really improve your quality of life, since this quality depends on what you need and want, not what others think you should have.

2. Don't let spending dominate your leisure and socialization time. Think about the activities you choose, and whether or not they put too much emphasis of spending money. For example, shopping. Many people love to shop; it is social, takes up time, and can be fun. If you do go shopping, make a list and condense all shopping for the week into a single trip. Humans have a very hard time resisting the urge to buy extras when shopping, but if you can do your best to cut down on this, you will find your wallets getting bigger.

3. Pay your bills on time and avoid any late fees. Get organized about your regular bills. Most utilities and recurring bills can be set to be charged to a credit card or taken out of a checking account these days. So there is really no excuse for forgetting to pay a bill on time.

4. Regulate your electric use. When not in use, unplug your electrical appliances. When not in a room, turn the lights and fan off. Also, by using a programmable thermostat to control your A/C and heater usage can save a lot of energy and money.

5. Make a budget and stick to it! Putting the numbers down on paper will show you just where all your money is going. You can spend less by identifying your own limits.

Saving money is one of those things that's so much easier said than done. However, by setting a goal, keeping track of your expenses, and making a budget, you can find yourself on the path for a brighter future, financially. Saving up is always a good idea!
