Finding Credit Cards for Poor Credit

By Kari Johnson on March 30, 2012

credit-card-MC-(1).jpgIn today’s world, credit is something that is necessary for many things: buying a car, renting a home, or even having a cell phone plan. But credit is easy to destroy and hard to repair afterwards, especially since you need to receive credit to improve credit, and it is hard to receive credit when your credit is poor. Credit card debt can often contribute to your poor credit, but then, if you use them correctly, credit cards for poor credit can help to improve your financial standing.

When deciding on a credit card to help improve your credit, you need to do your research. When you have poor credit, you may not have many options for credit cards. The interest rates, for instance, are high, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some options. You should look into every card option to find the cards with the lowest interest rates, minimum late fees, and other stipulations that could cost you money.

That being said, you should also be careful. Be certain that you have the income to pay off a credit card bill before applying for one. If your income will not support it, using a credit card will hurt you more than help you, by throwing you into more debt, hurting your credit score further, and costing you a lot more money in the long run.

When you have one of these credit cards, it is very important that you use it responsibly. You should always make your payments on time, and you should pay the entire bill when you receive it. Paying minimum balances or paying late will just make your credit worse, as well as deepen your debt. Keep your maximum credit line well below the amount you can pay each month, and make sure you pay it.

Credit cards can ruin your credit score if you take out too much money, fail to pay your bills on time, or ever default on a payment. But as dangerous as credit cards can be, they can also be exceedingly helpful if you use them responsibly and correctly. By picking the right card, paying your bills on time, and paying your bills in full, credit cards can help you rebuild credit they may have otherwise destroyed. You just have to be careful about it.
