Before Your Free Debt Consolidation Quote
Before Your Free Debt Consolidation Quote
By
Kari Johnson
on June 6, 2011
If a lot of debt has piled up in your life recently, you may have heard of debt consolidation. Someone has probably offered you a free debt consolidation quote. While “free” might have you thinking there is nothing to lose, there are some things to consider before getting a free debt consolidation quote.
The first thing you need to do when you have decided you want to consolidate is make a list of your debtors including their contact information, how much you owe them, and any other pertinent information.
Then decide which method of debt consolidation is right for you and your situation. There are two major methods. Some people choose
debt consolidation loans
. If this is the method you choose, you can go to your bank or a local credit union for a quote. The second method is to find a
debt consolidation agency
that you would pay monthly instead of paying your creditors. These are the companies that most often advertise free debt consolidation quotes.
Once you have decided on the method, you should have a pretty good idea of which company you want to use before asking for a quote. If you are looking for a debt consolidation agency, you should research their validity: look into their track record and success rates, as well as overall customer satisfaction. If you know people who have used the agency before, ask for their opinions. You should also get references for the company.
Once you have narrowed your choices down to a few companies with good reputations, you can begin to look into costs. With loans, the costs will most consist of interest rates, which you should ensure are lower than the interest rates you are currently paying. For debt consolidation agencies, you will probably have to pay fees.
It is essential to be sure of the company’s reputation before asking for a quote, as they will require some personal information before being able to assess your situation. Once you have determined the companies you are looking into have a good reputation as being both reliable and successful, then you can start looking for the costs.
You should be especially careful in consolidating your debt that you do not wind up paying more or lowering your credit score more with your solution than you would with your original problem. This is why it is so important to shop around before making a decision. To be sure your problem is fixed, reputation is as important as cost when you receive a free debt consolidation quote.
