Work-at-Home Scams

By Archana Sabesan on March 12, 2012

Medusa-(1).jpgAds and commercials about "working from home" can be seen everywhere - newspapers, Internet, television, etc. Each job might be different, but the underlying message is all the same, "start earning a great living today working from home, even in your spare time."

When money is tight, working from home seems like just the thing you need to make ends meet. Some even promise a refund if things don't go as you planned. However, the reality is that many of these jobs are scams. All these people are trying to do is get money out of you, while making you believe that you are investing in something worthwhile. But all that is happening is that your money is getting snatched right from under you. People tricked by these ads have lost thousands of dollars, not to mention time and energy.

Here are a few tips on how to avoid being a victim of these work-at-home scams:

1. Never pay for the chance to work! You should treat working at home just like you would treat working for an employer at their office. You would probably think it was ridiculous if the interviewer asked you to pay $50-$100 for the job, starter materials, etc. when you went in for an interview. Similarly, when you're asked to pay for the chance at a job, you know it's a scam.

2. Check out the business before you pay anything. Do some research on the company or business before you make an further decisions about working for them. Things like a real address and phone number, as well as any references are good things to look for.

3. Beware of vagueness and absurd claims. Companies that don't state their names, costs, or other important information are probably not doing so because they are scammers. Also, when they make claims such as "make up to $1,000 in just one week," it is better to be skeptical than gullible. Don't fall for the trap.

4. Be patient, and never reply to scams! Patience is virtue. No matter how bad you need a job, it pays to be patient so you don't fall victim to such scams and frauds that could end up putting you further in debt. If it's a scam, delete or ignore it and just keep moving on!

Who wouldn't like working and making money from the comfort of their own home? However, because people are too quick to decide, they fail to notice these warning signs. Don't fall trap to these work-at-home scams!
